Lemonade Stand

On Friday, Pebbles came home from school talking about having a lemonade stand. So on Sunday, that's exactly what we did.

We made Pebbles do as much of the work as she was capable of. So she painted the signs, squeezed the lemons, measured the sugar, etc... She helped carry the stuff down, and then stood in the baking hot sun shouting at passing cars and waving a sign.

We sold 33 cups of Lemonade in an hour and a half, and had the opportunity to meet a really great cross-section of metropolitan Detroit. We had families, couples, a member of law enforcement, people walking their dogs, old men, a woman in a wheelchair, and three guys who were brown bagging liquor, and just wanted to give the kid a quarter. Half the people who bought a 25 cent Lemonade paid with a dollar, and wouldn't accept any change. Almost everyone who drove past us smiled.

The kid would like you to know that she is going to use her earnings to buy a doll, or a nutcracker, or some stick-on nails.

  3. A little over a year ago, I heard about National Lemonade Day. Official website: http://www.lemonadeday.org/home
or cheesy interview with founder: http://www.pbs.org/nbr/site/onair/kids_financial_education/entrepreneurial_lemonade_stand_110429/

I learned about the day from a mother who took the opportunity to use the day to teach her children more about the business side of entrepreneurship. They sold dog treats at the dog park. I had talked to her about how she had explained the money aspect, and the balance of cost vs profit. (Kid language) The lesson of the year was advertisement. They had set up at the dog park with homemade treats, but nobody knew they were going to be there. Sadly nobody had ANY cash on them for the kids, but Mom was happy with the learning :)

I was excited to come back to the lemonade learning experience story

  4. Lemonade stand idea: capitalism at its finest. No doubt, someday, because of this experience, Pebbles will found a software company or something.
"The secret is in the lemons" . . .
    Cute photos.
Been to the Farmers market lately.
Here in Oman the weather broke, finally got cool (Omani frame of reference) with clouds spotted, wind from the north, waves on the sea . . .
A cold lemonade stand might do well over here . .
